Richard C. Slingerland, age 79, resident of Pulaski since 1957, passed away August 19th at Crouse Hospital. Richard was born March 13, 1942, in Syracuse, the son of Charles and Helen Salisbury Slingerland. He graduated from Pulaski High School in 1960. He played on the 1959 Pulaski varsity football team, which went undefeated and unscored upon in a season that is still talked about today. He also played varsity basketball and varsity baseball and was a member of The Varsity Club. He served in the Army from 1963 to 1965. As a young man he was a caretaker for some of the mansions in the famous Bel Air section of Los Angeles. He graduated from SUNY Oswego with a BS in Computer Science.
Richard enjoyed canoeing on Lake Ontario and its back ponds. He loved to sit on the shore of Southwick State Park and enjoy the lake's natural beauty. He enjoyed experiencing nature and being a part of and supporting nature-oriented organizations.
He loved history and enjoyed reading about it and was on the board of directors of the Pulaski Historical Society and member of the Half Shire Historical Society. He had an interest in genealogy, which led him to make friends from all over the U.S. and Canada. Richard was interested in studying UFOs and was a dignitary for the Mufon UFO Mutual UFO Network.
Richard was a caring person who was devoted to the care of his sister Nancy for many years. His caring nature contributed to his support of organizations dedicated to animal welfare, civil rights, and the environment. He studied the Bible faithfully and was a well-loved member of a Bible study group. Richard loved attending parties and gatherings with friends who will miss him dearly.
Surviving are his brother, William Slingerland and sister Nancy Slingerland both of Pulaski and many cousins.
A graveside service will be held 10 a.m., Friday, September 17th at the Pulaski Village Cemetery with The Rev. Joseph Hartigan, officiating. Arrangements by Foster-Hax Funeral Home, 52 Park Street, Pulaski.
