HERKIMER-ILION – Grace (Banick) A. Decker, age 61, of Willis Ave., Herkimer, passed away unexpectedly, on Tuesday, December 29, 2020, at St. Luke’s Hospital, New Hartford, of complications due to COVID 19. Grace was born on July 21, 1959, in Newburgh, NY, the daughter of David and Grace (Valastro) Banick. She graduated from St. Johnsville High School, HCCC and SUNY Polytechnical Institute, Marcy, in 1989. Grace was married to Ronald “Ron” C. Decker, on June 20, 1991, at St. Mary’s Church, Little Falls, by Father O’Reilly. Mrs. Decker was employed as a Residence Counselor at the Rome DDSO, for 30 years. Grace was an active member of St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer, where her daughter and son have been faithful altar servers. She was also a Homeroom Mother at St. Francis Regional School, Herkimer. Surviving family members include her loving husband, Ronald “Ron” C.; her son, Ronald “Ronnie”; her daughter, Grace “Gracie” and her canine companion, Aries, at home; her brother, David Banick and his wife, Valerie, of St. Johnsville; 2 nephews and 1 niece, Larry, John and Angela; 8 grand-nieces and grand-nephews; her sister-in-law, Barbara Baylis, of Ilion; several cousins; close long time friend, Lynette and her husband, Bert Sullivan, of Cassville; and many other friends. In keeping with the family’s wishes, due to the extreme risk of COVID 19, there are no scheduled public calling hours and funeral services at this time. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer, at a safer time later this spring (2021), at a date and time to be announced. Interment will follow the Mass, at the Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer. Anyone wishing to share a memory of Grace, or add to her online memorial, may go to www.applegateandday.com.
