Dear family, Only two weeks ago I spoke to Gijs and he was his usual energetic and upbeat self. The sudden sad news of his passing has therefore left me with great shock and sorrow. He was great man and brother-in-law who will be missed by all. I will cherish all the memories in Canada, the Netherlands and abroad. My thoughts go out to all of you and I wish you the strength you need to deal with this loss. Yours, Ome Theo

Dear family, With great sorrow I have learned of the death of Gijs. He was always kind and optimistic, whether it was on the phone in the last years, or as a host and guest in the years before. He will leave a big gap and my thoughts and prayers are with you all. Take care, Ome Harry IJzermans

Dear family, We are so sad to hear about the passing of your dad, opa and opa-opa. We had hoped he would be able to turn the corner after the initial setback, but it wasn't to be. I will always remember Gijs for his kindness and hospitality when hosting us on our many trips in Canada; his vitality and love for life (even through to the end and during this weird last year). His dedication was especially inspiring. Dedication to his family, his garden, his back-stretching exercises in our living room or on random hotel room floors. I will also cherish a few of the one-one memories, whether it was taking the dog for a walk around Oakville to climbing the Bruges bell tower "just to stretch our legs" while the others (my family, Thea and uncle Theo) were visiting one museum or the other. You will all be in our minds the coming days and long after, Lots of love, Wouter, Marion and Hendrik

Dear all, our deepest sympathy to your family. I will always remember "Ome Gijs" for the great times our families spent together, in Canada or in Europe. His humor and optimism always stood out. We are keeping you in our thoughts. All the best, Rutger, Paola & Daphne
