Jerry passed away on Saturday, November 20 at the age of 81. Despite having battled a medical condition that made it hard to speak he will be remembered by all who knew him as a teller of tall tales, a warm and funny host, an infinite well of facts and a kind-hearted husband, friend and father. Jerry was born in St. Stephen, New Brunswick and never lost his maritime sensibility. He could eat a mackerel in minutes and would talk to a stump if no other audience was available. He loved the water and spent his youth in the Royal Canadian Navy, beginning in the University Naval Training Division (UNTD) while a student at St. Francis Xavier University (StFX) and eventually retiring as a Lieutenant after serving aboard HMCS Athabascan, and teaching navigation at Cornwallis, among various postings. During this time, he met and was adopted into the Harley family who gave him a second home. On moving to Ottawa, the O’Brien and Harley clans took their sailing to the Ottawa River, their Christmases to Kenwood Ave. and their political debates to the next level. While in Halifax he met Helen Mullally, a generous and beautiful person of rapier wit who was not only smarter than him but could make gravy. Their 40-year-marriage was a true partnership of equals and their home was a place with great food, lively conversation, thousands of books and always a pesky cat or three. To this they added two daughters, Sarah and Jayne, who were raised to take learning, friendship and family seriously and take everything else with good humour – except baseball, baseball is serious business. Jerry’s professional life was spent in the National Archives of Canada where he had many roles including Chief of State and Military Records. His encyclopedic knowledge of Canadian history and endless curiosity for all things historical made his 34-year career a labour of love. Beyond the work he cared for deeply, his colleagues were a source of professional collaboration and inveterate shenanigans. The conferences he attended throughout Canada were equal parts serious deliberation and rascality. Always with notes of the fine cuisine, travel and visiting historical sites and landscapes that he loved so much. As his daughters and son-in-law, Duncan face the task of bringing closure to this life there is profound sadness because the most wonderful and kindly spirit is not with us. But as we remember him, break our backs moving his Lincoln Library, safely store his UNTD, Navy, StFX, National Archives, ACA, Montreal Expos and Boston Red Sox pins and mementos there is more laughter than tears. There are more stories than sadness and this is what Jerry left. A legacy of kindness, intellect and fun. The messages from his friends around the country and beyond are deeply appreciated and remind us of how much his friends mattered to him. He believed friendship was something to cherish and respect. To everyone who called him a friend, please know the feeling was mutual, whether you saw him recently or a decade ago, his memory was unfailing. Though he was not one to give strict advice, Jerry did have some credos that governed his world view: you can have a full turkey dinner at any time of year, when you swim off the boat don’t ease in off the ladder - you must dive off the pulpit, instant coffee is wrong, you can never watch a good re-run too many times, you can never tell a good story too many times – consider the saga of The Big Trip, road trips can be long or short but must happen, always travel with a corkscrew and always, always, no matter what shape you’re in, pay for your round. Thanks Dad, for everything. We will be okay. Those wishing to pay their respects to the family are very welcome on Thursday, December 2, 2021 between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at Pinecrest Visitation Centre, 2500 Baseline Road. All guests will be asked to please present their Covid vaccine receipts. If friends so desire memorial donations may be made to the Association of Canadian Archivists or The Ottawa Mission

My Tribute Gift Foundation makes this online charitable giving portal web page MyTributeGift.org (the “Website”) available to you subject to your acceptance of and compliance with these terms of use (the “Terms of Use”). Your donation will be processed through My Tribute Gift Foundation for distribution to your selected charity. Your credit card transaction record will appear as My Tribute Gift Foundation. An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.
You warrant and represent that all information and materials you provide to My Tribute Gift Foundation, through the Website or otherwise, are accurate and truthful and do not violate third party rights. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.

The courts of the Province of Ontario shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising out of these Terms of Use or your use of the Website.
These Terms of Use constitute the entire agreement between you and My Tribute Gift Foundation with respect to the Website, except as we may explicitly agree otherwise in writing.. As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified.
