Gertrude DeJong

Gertrude DeJong, 99, of Sioux Falls, SD, formerly of Platte, SD, passed away Monday, February 10, 2020 at Avera Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Funeral Services are 10:30 A.M. Saturday, February 15, 2020 at the Platte Christian Reformed Church. A Committal Service will follow at Platte City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Friday, February 14, 2020 at Mount Funeral Home in Platte. Gertrude (Visscher) DeJong was born on May 9, 1920 to Henry and Christina (Woudstra) Visscher in Platte, SD. She attended country school and worked as a housekeeper for several families and for two banks as a janitor. On March 3, 1943 she was united in marriage to Albert L. DeJong in Platte. Gertrude was a member of the Platte Christian Reformed Church, active in the Magdalene’s Ladies Society and Coffee Break Bible Study. She enjoyed sewing and embroidering. In 2008 she and Albert moved to Sioux Falls, SD where they were together until his passing on January 11, 2013. Grateful for having shared in Gertrude’s life, two daughters: Gloria (Garry) Van Zee and Judy Even all of Sioux Falls, SD; two grandchildren: Rylan (Trisha) Van Zee and Janae (Matt) Marcus; four great grandchildren: Dustin (Jessica VanBrocklin) and Dylan Van Zee, Julia and Claire Marcus; along with many nieces and nephews. Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband, Albert DeJong; her parents, Henry and Christina Visscher; four brothers: Hans (Agnes) Visscher, Cornelius (Elsie) Visscher, William (Jennie) Visscher and Gerrit (Gertrude) Visscher; two sisters: Nellie (Henry) Vandenbos and Anne (Joe) Dyk; her parents-in-law, Holst and Johanna DeJong; six brothers-in-law: Ralph (Grace) DeJong, Govert (Gertie) DeJong, Cornelius ”Case” (Edith) DeJong, Holst, Sipke and Louis DeJong; and seven sisters-in-law: Katherine (Andrew) Oosterkamp, Louise, Johanna “Honey” (Clarence “Boss”) Wynia, Cornelia “Kaye” (Jerry) Iedema, Henrietta “Yet” (Henry) Westerling, Henderika “Rekie” (George) Beck and Wilma (Joe) Meyerink.
