Malcolm Woodburn Gambill was born on June 9, 1930 in Crumpler, NC, a rural community in the northwest corner of the state, near the Virginia and Tennessee borders. He was the eldest of four siblings. He was proud of his rural roots and jokingly claimed that he was not a hillbilly, but a more refined “Hill William.” Malcolm recalled dynamiting moonshine stills with his father, who worked for a time as a federal revenue agent. A good student, Malcolm earned a scholarship to attend Yale University. Given the small size of Malcolm’s high school, he was asked to confirm his academic abilities by completing a post-graduate year at Phillips Academy Andover in Massachusetts. He continued on to Yale, playing on the Bulldogs’ football team and graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering in 1953. After university, he did two years active duty in the USMCR, having completed basic and platoon leader training in the summers prior. He used his engineering knowledge to help construct roads and other projects at the Marine Corps bases in 29 Palms and in Barstow, California. The location afforded periodic trips to Los Angeles and Las Vegas with fellow Marines; sleeping in the car off the Vegas Strip was apparently one money-conserving strategy. After his discharge, he joined Heckett Engineering, an industrial company providing specialized services to steel mills, based in Butler, Pennsylvania. He spent the entirety of his thirty-five year career with Heckett and its parent company, Harsco Corporation of Camp Hill, PA. He rose through the ranks, from a trainee, operating cranes and other heavy machinery, to the corporate Chairman and CEO. Very early in his career, while working in Wales, he met his future wife, Helen Jones, who was finishing her medical doctor training. She had a boyfriend at the time, but Malcolm was undeterred. Helen’s local beau owned an MG convertible; so did Malcolm. But unlike his rival, Malcolm let Helen drive his car. That made all the difference. They were married and began raising a family as Malcolm’s work assignments took them all from Wales, to Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina, Wales, Mexico and finally, Pennsylvania. The family lived in Butler, PA from 1971 until 1984, when Malcolm joined the Harsco corporate headquarters in Central Pennsylvania. He became CEO in 1987 and the Chairman of the Board in 1991, a role he held until he retired in 1994. Under his tenure, he oversaw the transformation of Harsco and its many divisions, propelling it into the Fortune 200. His work literally took him across the globe - to steel mills, shop floors, factories, foundries, assembly lines, to boardrooms, military installations, and on several occasions, the White House. He recalled meeting President Clinton and each enjoyed learning that the other was also born at home, in a rural house with no indoor plumbing. “It’s more fun looking back on it than it was actually experiencing it,” said Clinton, to which Malcolm heartily agreed. Malcolm’s greatest joy and accomplishment was his marriage to Helen. To have remained married after all his international business travel, especially early in his career, was no small feat. His successes were aided by Helen. She was his regular sounding board, counsel and confidant. His love and adoration for her never waned. His last words were to her; as he laid down on his last night he asked, “How are you?” Till the very end, his concern was focused on her. He adored Helen’s native country of Wales and its people. Malcolm and Helen spent many summers enjoying the long light-filled days with family and friends in the small market town of Cowbridge. He liked to joke that he had rescued her from a Welsh coal mine where she was guiding the pit ponies pulling coal carts. Malcolm’s humor, warmth and generosity will be well-remembered by many on both sides of the Atlantic and beyond. He was a loving, generous father and was delighted to see all his grandchildren flourishing. We will all miss him indeed, but are beyond grateful for his life, lessons and love. We hope that you will take a few minutes to share your favorite recollections of Malcolm and upload a photo or two. Thank you, in advance. Malcolm is survived by his wife, Helen; his children, Jonathan, Sally and Zander; their spouses; six grandchildren; a brother, Jerry; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be offered to The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. No public memorial services are yet planned.

My Tribute Gift Foundation makes this online charitable giving portal web page MyTributeGift.org (the “Website”) available to you subject to your acceptance of and compliance with these terms of use (the “Terms of Use”). Your donation will be processed through My Tribute Gift Foundation for distribution to your selected charity. Your credit card transaction record will appear as My Tribute Gift Foundation. An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.
You warrant and represent that all information and materials you provide to My Tribute Gift Foundation, through the Website or otherwise, are accurate and truthful and do not violate third party rights. TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL MY TRIBUTE GIFT FOUNDATION OR ITS AFFILIATES, OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, SERVICE PROVIDERS, AND AGENTS (THE "FOUNDATION PARTIES") BE LIABLE FOR ANY: (i) INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, COMPENSATORY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES; (ii) DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF INCOME, LOSS OF PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF DATA OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY; (iii) CLAIMS OF THIRD PARTIES; OR (iv) OTHER PECUNIARY LOSS, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THESE TERMS OF USE, THE WEBSITE OR ANY LINKED SITE. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.

As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified.
