Holland, George Walter 1943 - 2021 George Holland – teacher, traveller, and lover of the outdoors – passed away peacefully at home on May 2. He was surrounded by family. George was born in Kamloops, BC, but from the age of six he called Ottawa home. The trails of Ottawa and Gatineau – travelled by foot, bike, or ski – were a constant companion his entire life. His passion for the outdoors was superseded only by his positive energy and enthusiasm; his infectious laugh will long be remembered by all who knew him. After finishing his MSc at Carleton University, George headed to University College London to start a PhD in Chemistry. He left the PhD unfinished, but during his time in England he accomplished something much more important: he met the love of his life, Dianne, at the Tower of London. George and Dianne were married in 1974 in Ottawa. After teaching science at Brookfield, Ottawa Tech, and Laurentian High Schools, George arrived at Glebe Collegiate Institute in 1984 where he taught Chemistry for 20 years. While at Glebe, he coached cross-country skiing and cross-country running teams, ran the Outers’ Club, and developed and co-taught the Outdoor Ed program. He took students backpacking in the Adirondacks, hiking on Mt. Washington, canoeing down the French River, and biking, skiing, and general adventuring in many other places. His family members who live in Ottawa have become familiar with being asked, “wait – are you related to Mr. Holland from Glebe?” That question always led to a fond reminiscence from a former student about how George had helped instill their love of the outdoors, or had developed their respect for the environment, or how he had been their toughest (but fair) teacher, or simply that he had had a great sense of humour in the classroom. George and Dianne shared a love of travel and adventure. Soon after being married, they travelled for a year across Asia – by land from Greece to India and back – with then eight-year-old son Byron. His sense of adventure never faded, including when several years after his retirement George drove a motorbike (with Dianne on the back) through northern Vietnam with son Tim. In later years, George and Dianne travelled extensively with their wonderful group of friends. Those trips and those friendships were a great source of joy for George. A devoted father, George shared with his sons a love of the outdoors, of environmental stewardship, and of sports – but also of politics, science, and a good debate around the dinner table. George was an absolutely adoring grandfather who was known to turn into a bit of a seven-year-old himself when playing with his grandkids – shrieks of joy and glee were the soundtrack of visits from grandpa. Throughout his life, George never lost his curiosity or his love of learning. He was particularly fascinated by sciences and the natural environment. He was nearly 70 when he took up bridge for the first time but for his remaining years he studied it with great energy and played it until days before his passing. Right into his final days, George was having animated discussions with family and friends – always wanting to learn more. George is survived by his wife Dianne, his sons Byron (Andrea) and Tim (Bailey), his grandchildren Hannah (Tom), Jesse, Aaron, Claire and Sebastian, and his great-granddaughters Linh and Amelia. He is also survived by his sisters Penelope (Rob) and Judith, by his siblings-in-law Paul, Brenda, Chris, and Jeffie, and by many cherished nieces and nephews. George was forever optimistic and positive. This was always true, but never more obvious than in his final months, days, and even moments. His last days were filled with family and friends. He departed us with love and incredible grace. His family is deeply appreciative of the many health care workers and caregivers who supported George and Dianne in George’s final months. All of them went above and beyond. There will be a service for George on May 15th at 3:00pm, which will be shared via livestream for those who wish to attend. The livestream will be available on the Hulse, Playfair & McGarry website at www.hpmcgarry.ca. For those who wish, in memoriam donations can be made to the Sierra Club of Canada or to the Shepherds of Good Hope.

Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.

Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.

These Terms of Use constitute the entire agreement between you and My Tribute Gift Foundation with respect to the Website, except as we may explicitly agree otherwise in writing.. As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified.
