It is with our deepest and heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Sophia Mendyk-Potapinski (nee Gronski). She died in her home on Wednesday, September 23, 2020, surrounded by her loving family. Sophie was born on November 9, 1922 to Peter and Maria Gronski in Ustechko, Zalishchyky, Western Ukraine. In November 1937, she married James Mendyk in Ustechko and they immigrated to Canada in April 1938 to rejoin her parents in Paipoonge Township. Sophie and James soon after purchased a dairy and agricultural farm and later operated Mendyk’s General Store and Gas Bar on West Arthur Street, Fort William, Ontario. Since 1958 they were proprietors of local apartment buildings. After James passed away in 1991, Sophie met and married Phillip Potapinski in June 1993. They enjoyed going on many vacations and cruises, road trips across the United States and Western Canada, and visiting family in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Sophie was a Board of Trustees Member for Stanley, South Stanley, Pardee and Harstone School Districts, and a member of the Stanley Women’s Institute. Sophie was extremely proud of her Ukrainian heritage and very involved in the Ukrainian Canadian community. She was a member and assumed executive positions for the Ukrainain Canadian Women’s Committee, Ukrainian Women’s Association, East Fort William Prosvita Society, Prosvita Ladies Choir. Ukrainian (Fort William) Credit Union, Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. Volodymyr Parish of All Saints, church choir and ladies auxiliary. Sophie was also a member of St. Patrick Cathedral and the Catholic Women’s League. Sophie was truly a loved and respected lady who always appreciated the blessings in her life. Family was extremely important to her. She took great pride in her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and all their accomplishments. They brought her so much joy and happiness. She loved watching them at various Ukrainian cultural performances and events. Sophie excelled at cooking and baking all the traditional Ukrainian dishes, especially during the important Christmas and Easter holidays. She was passionate about passing on her love of her culture and traditions to the next generations. In 1989, Sophia took her daughter Sonia and granddaughter Lisa on a tour of Western Ukraine, and again in 2013 took her grandson Terry and great granddaughter Monica, to show them where she was born and raised. Sophie will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Sonia Prodanyk, grandchildren Terry Prodanyk (Laura, Monica, Julia, Mark); Lisa Prodanyk-Monteith (Randy, Rory); Kathy Delyea (David, Jackie (Marcya, Jagger), Dennis). Step-Children Allan Potapinski (Myrna - Gainsborough, SK), Elaine Potapinski (Winnipeg, MB), Carol Wegmann (Alvin - Calgary, AB), Dale Potapinski (Linda - Alida, SK), Dean Potapinski (Elan - Saskatoon, SK); as well as extended step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and extended family in Canada and Western Ukraine. Sophie was predeceased by her first husband James Mendyk, son Roman Mendyk, second husband Phillip Potapinski, brother Fred Gronski, parents Peter and Maria Gronski, and son-in-law William Prodanyk. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Center, or the charity of your choice. Mass will be held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 10a.m. with burial to follow in Stanley Hill Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to Mass. Due to the COVID-19 regulations if you wish to attend the visitation and Mass you must RSVP either by calling the Blake Funeral Chapel at 1 (807) 623-6446 or by visiting the Blake Funeral Chapel website on Sophie’s page, click “RSVP” in service details to book your time slot. As directed by the Province of Ontario and the Bereavement Authority of Ontario, the attendance at the funeral/visitation is restricted to 30% capacity or less and a record of attendance must be maintained. Wearing of masks or face coverings by everyone and maintaining social distancing of 6 feet is mandatory for those attending the services. May her memory be eternal. My Tribute Gift Foundation makes this online charitable giving portal web page MyTributeGift.org (the “Website”) available to you subject to your acceptance of and compliance with these terms of use (the “Terms of Use”). Your donation will be processed through My Tribute Gift Foundation for distribution to your selected charity. Your credit card transaction record will appear as My Tribute Gift Foundation. An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.
You warrant and represent that all information and materials you provide to My Tribute Gift Foundation, through the Website or otherwise, are accurate and truthful and do not violate third party rights. TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL MY TRIBUTE GIFT FOUNDATION OR ITS AFFILIATES, OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, SERVICE PROVIDERS, AND AGENTS (THE "FOUNDATION PARTIES") BE LIABLE FOR ANY: (i) INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, COMPENSATORY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES; (ii) DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF INCOME, LOSS OF PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF DATA OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY; (iii) CLAIMS OF THIRD PARTIES; OR (iv) OTHER PECUNIARY LOSS, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THESE TERMS OF USE, THE WEBSITE OR ANY LINKED SITE. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.

As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified.
