Donald "Don" Gibson

Don Gibson, M.T., BSC MINING ENGINEERING, P.ENG 1947-2020 After a very strong and courageous battle with Pancreatic Cancer, Don passed away peacefully at home embraced by his wife and son on June 22, 2020. Don was born and raised on the Gibson family farm in Beeton, Ontario. He was drawn to the mining vocation at a young age and at 17 years old he attended Lakehead University graduating in Mining Technology. In May 1967 he was hired by INCO in the Surveyors Dept. In 1977 Don was fortunate to receive the opportunity to attend Laurentian University under the recommendation of past INCO President Jim Ashcroft on an INCO Scholarship and graduated in the Mining Engineering program in 1981. He worked at various levels of INCO management in mining operations retiring in 2010. After a short-lived retirement Don began his second career as a Consultant for Vales new mine development projects ending in 2019 on the exciting future Sudbury mine development- Victor Mine Project. During his 52-year mining career with INCO/CVRD/VALE Don was a very well respected professional and mentor to many in the industry. Don's love of worldwide travel with his wife Linda and friends and his love of nature and the outdoors contributed to over 50 years as a hobbyist landscape painter. His art pieces hang proudly throughout their home and in homes of family and friends. Most of all Don loved his wife of 51 years Linda (Lin) (nee Trottier); proudly cherished son Dylan (Anita) and the 'Apples of his Eye', Darby and Matilda. Son of Fred and Jean Gibson (predeceased), beloved brother Brian (Brenda) and fondly missed sister Dianne (Butler) (predeceased). Loved affectionately by many Gibson & in law family along with Nephews, Nieces around the world. He cherished his friendships and held a special place in his heart for close life long loyal friends. Along with Cancer comes community care so Linda and family wish to thank the 'village' of healthcare and support providers from HSN and NCC. At end of life home care thanks to the Northeaster LHIN Nurse Practitioner and team, dedicated Bayshore Nurses and our PSW angels from Home Instead. Don leaves us all with his legacy of great humour, respected mentorship and his dedicated love of family and friends. A Celebration of Life will be planned post pandemic days. Donations to the Don Gibson Mining Engineering Award (Cheques can be made payable to Laurentian University - Don Gibson Mining Engineering Award) or the Northern Cancer Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
