Obituary for William Donald Garrison William Donald Garrison, 87, went to be with the Lord on August 8, 2020, peacefully in the care of the Halifax Hospice Center in Orange City, FL. Don was born on Nov. 30, 1932 at home on the family farm in Rockingham Co., NC. He was the youngest son of Ed and Helen Garrison’s eight children. He had 4 sisters, Alma, Elsie, Ruth and Pearl; and 3 brothers, Claude, Whitt and Nash. All of his siblings preceded Don in death. Don grew up and lived on the family farm until he attended Wake Forest University on a football scholarship. He played tackle for the team. Upon graduation, he remained on as a teacher and coach. Don served in the US Army Reserve making rank as Captain and honorably discharged in 1965. Don had a lifelong career with the Coca-Cola Corp in Marketing and Sales. This position offered many wonderful opportunities to travel which he took advantage of. He married Mary Jo in 1980 and they made their home in Sanford, FL. Don loved Florida and took every chance to get outside. An avid “nature lover”, he loved to sail, fish and especially golf. Don spent many years by his daughter Karla’sside enjoying their love of horses. Don could always be found clipping bushes and puttering in his yard. Surviving a long successful battle with cancer, they decided it was time for a “change of scenery.” They moved to the river in Homosassa Springs, FL where leisure sports were abundant and finally to Lake Greenwood in SC where they spent many wonderful years. They were active atThe Rock Presbyterian Church where Don especially loved getting together with the guys and playing in the church’s golf tournaments. He always said he wasn’t any good, but he sure brought home the trophies. Mary Jo and Don moved back home to Debary, FL in 2019 to be closer to family in their later years. Don’s two daughters, Karrie and Karla, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Mary Jo and her two girls. Lorrie Shue and Husband Mick of Osteen, FL and Diann Samples and Husband Read of Ft. Myers, FL. He also has two grandchildren he adored very much, Read Jacob and Shelby Samples. Don is also survived by two nieces, Linda and Marsha along with two nephews, Charles and Randy who live in NC. Don Garrison was the kindest, most gentle man who left the roadmap for a life well-lived. He will be missed by many. Visitation services will be at Lankford Funeral Home, 220 E. New York Ave, Deland, FL 32724 on Thursday evening, August 13th. Family will receive visitors from 5:30 until 7:30. A graveside burial service will follow on Friday, August 14th at 10:00 am. Oakdale cemetery in Deland, FL A Memorial Service will be held at The Rock Presbyterian Church, Greenwood, S.C. at a later date.
