Michael Mueller, a resident of Towaco since 1968, died at home with his family by his side. He was 88 1/2 years old.
Born on August 14, 1933, he was the son of Jakub and Anna Mueller. Raised in the German settlement town of Henegszabar, in Austria, he was very proud of his German heritage.
At the age of 24, he immigrated to the United States. Living in Clifton, he met the love of his life, Katherine Erli. The two married in 1958, and welcomed the births of two children. After a brief time in Lincoln Park, the family settled in Towaco in 1968, and happily lived there until his final days.
As a self-employed subcontractor, Michael was very handy. He built both of his homes, and endlessly helped his family with their own homes. Michael was always willing to lend a helping hand.
In 1968 the Muellers also purchased property in Wysox Township, Pennsylvania. There, Michael loved spending time with his family and friends, as well as hunting, reading, and just enjoying the great outdoors. Most of all, though, he loved just being with those most dear to him.
A history buff, Michael really enjoying sharing his knowledge with anyone who would listen. He was also a talented harmonica player, and his family always enjoyed hearing him play, especially when he would play his own songs. His birthday present to all was always a phone call, where he'd play "Happy Birthday" on his harmonica, just for you. He was very proud when his granddaughter took to music, as well, and when she learned to play the flute, he never missed one of her concerts.
Michael will always be remembered for his love, and collection of, Volkswagen buses. Over the years he owned three: a 1965, and 1978, and a 1999. He took great care of them, and was often stopped by other fanatics that would love to talk of their love of the classic car, too.
Michael was a member of the Sportsfriends Soccer Club in Wayne. Before the passing of his wife, Katherine, in 2008, they greatly enjoyed socializing with the Brendli's and the Kiraly's, and the three couples would regularly play card games together.
Following Katherine's death, Michael returned to Germany to visit his sisters. While there, he reconnected with his first love, Liesel Kuppers. They had a lot in common, and would spend the next 10 years traveling back and forth from the USA to Germany, enjoying each other's company once again. His children were so happy that their father had found love, once again. Sadly, Liesel passed away in 2020.
Michael was dearly loved by his family. His children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family are so grateful for both he and Katherine, and are so sad to lose him. He is lovingly survived by his children, Robert Mueller and his wife Karra, and Heidi Kleine and her husband Jeff; his sisters, Maria Stefan and her husband Sepp, and Barbara Becker and her husband Horst; his grandchildren, Matthew Kleine and his wife Brittany, and Alexandra Hutchison and her husband Sean, Alexa Mueller and Karl Mueller ; his great-grandchildren, Braden, Hadley, Liam and Cade; as well as his many German nieces and nephews, and the loving members of his wife's family.
Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, February 16, 2022 from 6-8 pm at the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 am Thursday at St. Joseph's Church, West Milford. Burial will follow in the church cemetery following Mass.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Michael's memory to the American Heart Association would be greatly appreciated by his family.
