NEW VIENNA, IOWA Steven A. Kerper, age 71, of New Vienna, Iowa died on February 4th, 2022, after an 8-year battle with cancer. Visitation will be held 2 - 7 p.m., Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, New Vienna. Visitation will continue 9 – 10 a.m., at St. Boniface Catholic Church, New Vienna prior to funeral services. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in New Vienna. Burial will follow in the church cemetery where military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post #137. Rev. Dennis Quint will officiate with Rev. Carl Ries and Rev. Phil Kruse concelebrating. Steve was born on July 28th, 1950 to Arthur (Bob) and Lucina (Lou) Kerper in New Vienna, Iowa. As a young man Steve loved to hunt, fish and trap along the north fork of the Maquoketa. On October 9th, 1971, Steve married his high school sweetheart, Linda Goedken in Petersburg, Iowa. Steve served in the National Guard from 1969 to 1975. In 1974, Steve and Linda purchased an acreage Northeast of New Vienna, built a home and raised their family there. It was an ideal location and neither one ever had any desire to live anywhere else. Being an avid conservationist, Steve planted hundreds of trees on his property and served as a Pheasants Forever Food Plot Coordinator. In 1977, Steve purchased Kerper’s General Store which had been in his family for four generations. As many small town stores do, the store saw hard times. Determined to keep the store going Steve turned to carving beautiful decorative duck decoys and added antiques to his store inventory. Being a true outdoorsman, it was not hard for Steve to create these carvings. He knew exactly how they should look and just “carved away anything that did not look like a duck”. His talent resulted in an invitation to represent the State of Iowa at the 1996 Festival of American Folk Life at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. He was truly honored. It was the trip of a lifetime. Steve was a sports enthusiast. He especially loved baseball. This led him to purchase a lathe and begin making custom baseball bats. The addition of these items enabled his store to continue. He was very proud to recently celebrate the 150th year of the Kerper Store Tradition. Steve could be seen carving these decoys sitting on a bench in front of his store. He often said, “find a job you enjoy doing and you will never have to work a day in your life”. He loved spending time in his store. As his children grew up, he would adjust his schedule in the store so he’d never miss their ballgames or events. He made many friends and met many people; he could talk to anyone about anything. Steve was an honest man of integrity. He was very kind and generous and gave of his time to his parish and town. He facilitated the Hunters Safety Program for future hunters. He helped so many people with his long-time involvement in the AA program. He was a Charter member of the Tri County Sportsmen’s Association, he served as President of the New Vienna Business boosters, President of the Holy Name Society in St. Boniface, President of the St. Boniface Parish Council and was on the board of the New Vienna Athletic Association. Steve’s knowledge of New Vienna history and his love for the town was his inspiration for working with the New Vienna Area Historical Society. He was a sincere volunteer and donated his time and talent to anyone who needed help. Steve’s greatest joy was raising his family and spending time with them; his legacy will live on through them. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren as they participated in all sports, especially baseball. He was a spectator in over 2,500 games and always offered his opinion. Steve loved going for Sunday drives and listening to his favorite music. He enjoyed cooking and always joked, “Never trust a skinny cook.” Those left to cherish Steve’s memory include his wife of 50 years, Linda; three children Chris (Danielle) Kerper, Cheri (Jamie) Biermann, and Craig (Allison) Kerper; five grandchildren, Elisabeth and Alexander Kerper, Max and Ellie Biermann and Jett Kerper; sister Karen (Steve) Tapke, brother Rick Kerper, father-in-law, Fred Goedken, in-laws, Steve Goedken, Dan (Mary) Goedken, Sharon (Mike) Wolfe, Carmen (Santiago) Sanchez, Kevin (Lisa) Goedken, nieces, nephews and many friends. Steve was preceded in death by his parents – Arthur and Lucina Kerper, niece, Emily Kerper, stepfather, Dick Morris and mother-in-law, Elaine Goedken. Steve’s family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Steve’s excellent care team and Hospice of Dubuque for all of their kindness and care provided. My Tribute Gift Foundation makes this online charitable giving portal web page MyTributeGift.org (the “Website”) available to you subject to your acceptance of and compliance with these terms of use (the “Terms of Use”). An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.

TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL MY TRIBUTE GIFT FOUNDATION OR ITS AFFILIATES, OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, SERVICE PROVIDERS, AND AGENTS (THE "FOUNDATION PARTIES") BE LIABLE FOR ANY: (i) INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, COMPENSATORY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES; (ii) DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF INCOME, LOSS OF PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF DATA OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY; (iii) CLAIMS OF THIRD PARTIES; OR (iv) OTHER PECUNIARY LOSS, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THESE TERMS OF USE, THE WEBSITE OR ANY LINKED SITE. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.

As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified.
