Sarah Johnson

Sarah Tipton Johnson, age 84, of Lake Village, AR died Thursday, December 31, 2020 at Baptist Health Medical Center due to complications with COVID-19. Sarah was born August 21, 1936 in Lake Village, AR to the late Thomas Landon Tipton and the late Irene Gilliam LeLouis. As a young girl, Sarah developed a passion for helping others. With that passion guiding her, she graduated from Baptist School of Nursing In 1957 in Memphis, TN. After a few years in nursing, a close friend convinced her to go to Nurse Anesthetists School. Sarah went on to Cincinnati where she graduated with a degree in nurse anesthesiology in 1966. Sarah married the love of her life, C.D., on October 15, 1966. She passed her state boards the next year and became a certified anesthetist. She quickly landed a job at Chicot Memorial Hospital as the Anesthetist. Her dedication to her community and her position was evident as she was on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week for over 35 years. Sarah also won many prestigious awards throughout her nursing career. In 1998, she received the Excellence in Nursing Leadership Award for Advanced Practice. 2002 was her year to shine. She was presented with the Certified Nurse Anesthetist of the Year by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, the Alice Magaw Outstanding Practitioner Award and the National honor of Alice Magaw Outstanding Clinical Anesthesia Practitioner Award by Board of Directors of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. Sarah was an active member of Arkansas Associations of Nurse Anesthetist for several years serving as secretary, president-elect, president and a Government Relation Chairman for this organization. Sarah was also a member of Arkansas Nurses Association and a charter member for the Advanced Practice Council. After devoting 43 years to her passion of “passing gas,” Sarah retired in 2010. Sarah was a well-respected member of the Lake Village community and the hospital community; she was an outstanding nurse with a personality that kept everyone smiling, even a patient going into surgery. She was also a loving, caring person and was one of Chicot Memorial’s finest assets. It is safe to say that the hospital was her family. She never shook hands, she always gave hugs. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Village. While she devoted her life to her career, she was also a full-time mother. It is safe to say that she loved her entire family with her whole heart. With family members spread across the country, she loved most holidays and family events when the whole family was together. She was also extremely proud of her grandchildren and was sure to let everyone know that. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren participate in activities and wanted to be in involved in each of their lives as much as possible. She wanted the best for her grandchildren and enjoyed watching them grow throughout their lives and was so proud of all of their accomplishments. Sarah was preceded in death by her parents, brother, John Landon Tipton, sister, Nina LeLouis Pieroni, and daughter, Rose Marie Pessemier. She is survived by her husband, of 54 years, Charles Dickens Johnson and her four boys, Charlie (Nese) Johnson of Seattle, WA, Matt (Terri) Johnson of Fox Island, WA, Jon (Heather) Johnson of Fort Myers, FL, Rusty (Carrie) Johnson of Lake Village, AR, and favorite son-in-law, Bill (Stephanie) Pessemier of Port Orchard, WA, seven grandchildren, Lindsay Dunlap, Laura Horstman Ryan Johnson, Adam Buckley, Alyssa, Miranda, and Mason Johnson, eight great-grandchildren, Landon, Noah, Miarose Mueller, William Vian, Wallace Horstman, Carter, Gavin, and Piper Johnson, a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, hospital family and friends who were all so very dear to her.
