Al was an amazing friend of mine over many decades. He and I could alienate an entire room if we got talking about our time on the drilling rigs so long ago. We all know Al was a very fit jock in his day. On one beautiful sunny summer day in the Rockies, I felt great satisfaction when I out rode him to the top of the Highwood Pass (Canada's highest paved pass). 'I beat the athlete king!' (Maybe sometimes we all can be small like that.) I also recall the morning in Cypress Hills when Al almost burned out our campsite while trying to start a campfire with Coleman fuel after rain the night previous. A few minutes after we got the spreading fire out, a deer walked into our campsite to thank us! Many other fun memories with Al will stay with me forever, like casting for loons on a lake because we were such poor fishermen. (Don't get too upset. The loons were completely safe the whole time.) I will cherish those memories and many more always. Al was a friend like no other.

As a grandson of Gertude Hare Hayes, I first met Alan during a family visit to the "old" Iroquois in 1954, when his mother allowed my brother Dennis and me (ages 9 and 5) the thrill of wheeling baby Alan around the block in his carriage. It was great to reconnect with him decades later, to be on his email list, and to exchange comments with him. I will miss that but will cherish the memory of my cousin Alan. My thoughts are with you.
