Emile Raymond Jean February 16, 1960 – August 27, 2020 It is with great sadness that the family of Emile Jean, better known as Gonzo, say goodbye to one of our most colourful family members. Gonzo, as he insisted that his friends and acquaintances call him, lived in Thunder Bay his whole life. He was born on February 16, 1960 to mom Marie and dad Hector, one of 4 boys and 1 girl and was raised in Current River where he made many lifelong friends. He always fondly recalled growing up in Current River where he could play tennis at Black Bay School, swim at P&G, play hockey for the Current River Meteors and later the Comets at Current River Arena … he lost his teeth playing hockey there when he was in his teens. Having lost his dad at a young age, he had several father figures that helped him get through the early years. Although he left the house on Black Bay Crescent in his teens to go out on his own, he bought the house from his mom when he married his wife of 34 years, Kerri Chaboyer. In his teens, Emile began working for a local contractor where he learned many of the carpentry skills that he picked up over the years. He also worked for the Shipyards and then at Lakehead University for almost 30 years. Gonzo was a well known figure at LU where he met so many people and retained many friendships, he liked to say that even the President of LU called him Gonzo! He had two beautiful children that he was so proud of, his daughter Casey in 1988 and his son Lucas in 1992. In 1993, the family moved to Brent Street where so many memories were made with our family and friends during the 25 years we were there including some travel holidays to Disney with the kids, to hot spots with friends and many golf vacations, a sport he took up with his father in law, Bryan. The day we moved into Brent St, we became fast friends with our neighbours and their girls whom he just adored and who shared his love of the Maple Leafs. Emile set up his garage as a workshop there and made so many beautiful wood products for both us and many other people. As soon as Kerri said ‘I have an idea’, he knew he was in trouble and he would have to start a new project but he always did it with determination and perseverance and he always got the job done. He retired from LU in 2017 to help build his and Kerri’s dream log cabin back on the Current River and where he once again found some old and new friends within minutes of moving out there. He put his heart and soul into the cabin and has a left a legacy for his family that we will never forget. Gonzo made friends with everyone he met, his enthusiasm for life was infectious so he leaves behind a huge number of people that will feel his loss particularly his immediate family, his wife Kerri, daughter Casey and son in law Jordan, grandchildren Zoe and Carter, son Lucas, sister Annette Wabegijig (Cleo), brothers Gerard (Lorraine), Daniel (Janet) and Frank (Connie), many nieces and nephews and his close friends. He was a fixture in the Chaboyer family gatherings as Bev and Bryan’s son in law, Jody Bayes (Brian), Lori & Brook’s brother in law, uncle and great uncle and we will miss his presence immeasurably along with the extended Jean families and relations who he kept in contact with. Due to the current restrictions for COVID-19, a outdoor celebration of Gonzo’s life will be held for family and close friends at his property on September 11, 2020 from 1 to 4pm. We encourage anyone attending to be safe and drive with someone if possible. We would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support that we have received over the past week. This quote was given to us by a friend and it really says it all “Your wings were ready but our hearts were not”. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Dewdrop Inn Thunder Bay, Shelter House Thunder Bay or RFDA (Regional Food Distribution Association) Thunder Bay would be greatly appreciated. Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 332 North May Street, Thunder Bay.

My Tribute Gift Foundation makes this online charitable giving portal web page MyTributeGift.org (the “Website”) available to you subject to your acceptance of and compliance with these terms of use (the “Terms of Use”). Your donation will be processed through My Tribute Gift Foundation for distribution to your selected charity. Your credit card transaction record will appear as My Tribute Gift Foundation. An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.
You warrant and represent that all information and materials you provide to My Tribute Gift Foundation, through the Website or otherwise, are accurate and truthful and do not violate third party rights. TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL MY TRIBUTE GIFT FOUNDATION OR ITS AFFILIATES, OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, SERVICE PROVIDERS, AND AGENTS (THE "FOUNDATION PARTIES") BE LIABLE FOR ANY: (i) INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, COMPENSATORY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES; (ii) DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF INCOME, LOSS OF PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF DATA OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY; (iii) CLAIMS OF THIRD PARTIES; OR (iv) OTHER PECUNIARY LOSS, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THESE TERMS OF USE, THE WEBSITE OR ANY LINKED SITE. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.

As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified.
