Sandra Susan Merrylees passed away suddenly at Health Sciences North on Monday June 1, 2020 in her 66th year. Beloved wife of Darwin “Red” Merrylees and cherished mother of Donald Merrylees and grandmother of Matthew and Megan Merrylees. Sandy will be sadly missed by her brothers-in-law Hal Purkey, Delbert Merrylees, sisters-in-law Marlene Burns, Barbara Blue, Carol Bahnuk, Audrene Merrylees. Nieces Kim (Kenny) Orford, Lynn Delany, Lee (Bob) Chatwell, Lorie Burns and nephews Michael Purkey, David (Joanna) Purkey, Kenny and Linda Lehman. Also remembered by her extended family and friends. Predeceased by her parents Chester and Kathlene (Lehman) Burns, brother Stewart Burns, sister Donna Purkey, brother in law Curtis Merrylees, Gary Blue, sister in law Audrey Merrylees, Roger Delany, father and mother in law Cecil and Dorothy Merrylees. Sandy was born in Mindemoya on November 10th 1954 and grew up in Gore Bay. Sandy married Darwin “Red” Merrylees on February 11th 1974 in the Gore Bay courthouse. They moved to Lively that same year as Red started full time at INCO and Sandy started at the Toronto Dominion bank in Lively. Sandy and Red had one child, their son Donald was born at the Mindemoya hospital in 1974. Red and Sandy lived in Lively for thirty years while raising their son, but Sandy’s true love was always the Island. After thirty years with TD, Sandy retired and returned back to Gore Bay to join her husband (Red) who retired the year before. Sandy was very athletic growing up playing many sports, although sportsmanship and having fun were some of her best qualities, she had a fierce competitive side. Sandy played basketball, baseball, golf, curling, downhill skiing. She even played baseball on the Sudbury travelling team the Sudbury Sonics when she first moved to Lively. Sandy’s favourite sport became curling. She was a member of the Copper Cliff Curling Club, Idylwylde Golf and Country Club . Once retired, she became heavily involved with the Gore Bay Curling Club. Sandy was crucial in acquiring funds through government grants and local investors in order to pay for a new and much needed ice making system. She was also heavily involved in helping run bonspiels and booking the club for private venues. Sandy was always trying to think of new ways to retain the current members but also to get “young people” interested in curling. Sandy’s love of curling had her travelling all over the world and making amazing life long friends. Sandy also loved to travel. Whether Red was willing or not, she was adamant on travelling to as many places as she could. She travelled often with her sister Donna, family and close friends. She travelled to all parts of the world, from the East to West Coast of Canada, throughout the United States and even as far as Europe. She loved adventure and would be up to doing just about anything. She even whitewater rafted the Grand Canyon with family. Recently her main traveling companion was life long friend Mary Lynn McQuarrie. They went on many travelling adventures together including a “Thelma and Louise” parody trip in a convertible Camaro from Gore Bay all the way to her sisters home in Arizona. Family was very important to Sandy. Although she was younger than both her siblings, she was very close to them and their children. Her brother Stu’s children were not much younger than she was and were brought up more like sisters. She was very close to her sister, Donna, even though she moved away from the Island at a very young age. Sandy was constantly visiting her sister in Chicago, Greenwich, and Phoenix. Sandy and Red only had one son, but seemed to have raised 6 or 7 boys from Donalds group of friends. They were always at the house or camp, like the brothers he never had. If you were to ask them, they would admit that she was like a second mother to all of them. Her pride and joy was the love of her grandchildren, Matthew and Megan. Even though she retired back to the Island shortly after Matthew was born, Sandy seemed to be at everything they did. She went to hockey and ringette tournaments, volleyball tournaments, graduations, birthdays, you name it she was there. She loved spending time cooking, baking, water skiing, downhill skiing, seadooing and four wheeling with the both of them. Most of Sandy’s time was spent in their house in Gore Bay and out at their camp on Tobacco Lake with her husband Red and their dogs Gunner and Carley. She had a great life living in paradise in two beautiful places that were near and dear to her heart. She loved a full heart and lived a full life and if she was here to ask she would probably tell you that she wouldn’t change a single thing. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Gore Bay Curling Club ,( this can be done by e-transfer to GoreBayCC@gmail.com) or the Canadian Cancer Society as expressions of sympathy and may be made through www.simpsonfuneralhome.ca

My Tribute Gift Foundation makes this online charitable giving portal web page MyTributeGift.org (the “Website”) available to you subject to your acceptance of and compliance with these terms of use (the “Terms of Use”). Your donation will be processed through My Tribute Gift Foundation for distribution to your selected charity. Your credit card transaction record will appear as My Tribute Gift Foundation. An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.

Indemnity. As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified.
