Colin passed away in the early hours of Monday, January 17, 2022, in his 94th year, at his home at the Sunshine Centre, Luther Village on the Park, Waterloo, Ontario. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 61 years, MaryJoan Stearn (nee Mackenzie 1929-2014), his father Clement Hodgson Stearn and mother Doris Lilian Phillips, sister Hilary Ayre Jones, and step-mother Rosalynde Fuller Stearn. Colin was born on July 16, 1928 in Bishop’s Stortford, England and emigrated to Canada as a child. He spent his formative years in Hamilton, Ontario attending Hillfield School, Westdale C.I. and graduated from McMaster University in 1949 with a B.Sc. in Honours Geology. He continued his graduate studies at Yale University. He was granted a Phd in 1952 and accepted a position of Assistant Professor of Geology at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. While there, Colin served in many different roles, including chairman, of the Department of Geological Sciences. During his career he worked for the Geological Survey of Canada, did field work in the Canadian north and Rockies and spent time in the Caribbean studying corals and mentoring many geology students. Serving on many national committees and scientific societies throughout his career, he had the opportunity to travel and often presented his research to the scientific community around the world. HIlHHiHillHIlka;jkldfh djf Colin was an avid reader and writer, publishing two university textbooks while at McGill. He enjoyed writing stories for the Village Voice at Luther Village during his retirement years. Colin was a longtime member of Lakeside Heights Baptist Church in Pte. Claire, Quebec and after retirement at Highland Baptist Church in Kitchener, Ontario. A devoted deacon, Sunday school teacher and Superintendent and on various boards and committees at these churches. MaryJoan and Colin enjoyed live theatre and symphony concerts. They spent many happy times with family and friends at their cottage in Gravenhurst and the “Country” near Sutton, Quebec. Loving father of Patricia Joosse (Lawrence), Virginia Pope (Charles K.), and Andrew Stearn (Stephanie). Dear Papa of Matthew Joosse (Veronica), Sarah Schoeffel (Derrick), Lauren McConnell (Scott), Jessica King (Johnny), Carleigh Pope and Tomas McManus, Rosalynde Stearn and Steve Reynolds, and Lydia Stearn. Colin was proud to be a Grandpapa to 5 wonderful great grandchildren, Colin and Rita Joosse, Sophie and Katie McConnell and Emma King. He loved to debate with his grandchildren and had a wry sense of humour, which will be fondly remembered and greatly missed. A private family gathering is planned for the Spring when family can meet again safely. My Tribute Gift Foundation makes this online charitable giving portal web page MyTributeGift.org (the “Website”) available to you subject to your acceptance of and compliance with these terms of use (the “Terms of Use”). An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.
You warrant and represent that all information and materials you provide to My Tribute Gift Foundation, through the Website or otherwise, are accurate and truthful and do not violate third party rights. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.
If in any part of these Terms of Use is held, by a court of competent jurisdiction, to be invalid or unenforceable, such part of these Terms of Use shall be eliminated to the extent permitted in that jurisdiction, for purposes of that jurisdiction, and the remaining Terms of Use shall otherwise remain in full force and effect.
These Terms of Use and your use of the Website are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and all federal laws of Canada applicable therein. The courts of the Province of Ontario shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising out of these Terms of Use or your use of the Website.
These Terms of Use constitute the entire agreement between you and My Tribute Gift Foundation with respect to the Website, except as we may explicitly agree otherwise in writing.. No delay or failure to exercise any right with respect to these Terms of Use shall be construed as a waiver by My Tribute Gift Foundation.
As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified. It is your responsibility to review these Terms of Use regularly.
