Tam and I didn't see Mimi often, but we loved the time we spent with her. (Mostly giving her a ride to or from our annual visits with our dear friend Dennis Cunningham at Pat and Flint's house, or seeing her at various lefty events, or at the exercise class Tam attended taught by Mimi's daughter Suzanne. Mimi and other progressive activists of her generation have been an inspiration to us. The world is a better place for Mimi's presence. She will be missed by many. Our deepest sympathies to Mimi's large and loving family.

Mimi Harris, kind and loving mother, super-activist, champion of all those in need, and all-around mensch, threw off her mortal coil and died peacefully on February 7, 2022. Born in Chicago on July 9, 1931, she spent much of her life in the steadfast pursuit of social justice. She became a "passionate change-the-world person" starting in Roger's Park in the 1940's with her mother, Fritzie Markels, lobbying with Independent Voters of Illinois for affordable health care. Her tireless work to ensure affordable housing, improve public education and fight for peace and women's rights touched many lives. Whether with Jewish Federation’s EZRA Multi-Service Center serving the community, fighting for affordable housing with O.N.E. Organization of the Northeast and local government, or protesting unethical practices with JCUA, Jewish Council on Urban Affairs, she kept busy with the Jewish value, Tikkun Olam and kindness. She managed the independent movie house, Three Penny Cinema featuring 1st run movies like Monterey Pop and Martin Scorses's first film Who's That Knocking On My Door. She was a leader, mother, sister, friend, mentor, and moral compass to many. Younger people were especially drawn to her. "She pushed people to be better" and "made a wonderful impact on so many lives". Her home was always open with food on the table and a respite to all who needed it. Miriam “Mimi” Harris, nee Markels, life-long activist, and woman of valor died peacefully on February 7, 2022. Born in Chicago on July 9, 1931, she spent much of her life pursuing justice, whether to provide social services, affordable housing, improve public education or fight for peace and women's rights. Mimi was the beloved wife of the late Sydney Harris; loving mother of Marc (Patsy Comella) Harris, Adam Harris, and Suzanne Harris and stepmother of Paul (Barbara) Harris, Jerry (Veronica) Harris, and the late David Harris; dear grandmother of Josh, Jamie Carmen, Corey, and Keith; devoted daughter of the late Alex and the late Frieda Markels; cherished sister of the late Julian (Robin) Markels and the late Chuck (late Marcia) Markels; treasured aunt, cousin, and friend to many. Mimi was a mentor and moral compass to many. She ran the Three Penny Cinema, worked for and with the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs, EZRA Multi-Services, Organization of the Northeast, local government, and so many more. Her home was always open and provided respite to all who needed it. Service Thursday, 12 Noon CT at The Chapel, 8851 Skokie Blvd., Skokie (at Niles Center Rd.). Your donation will be processed through My Tribute Gift Foundation for distribution to your selected charity. Your credit card transaction record will appear as My Tribute Gift Foundation. An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.
You warrant and represent that all information and materials you provide to My Tribute Gift Foundation, through the Website or otherwise, are accurate and truthful and do not violate third party rights. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.

As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified.
