Janice M. Vicine passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2023, with her three children and oldest granddaughter by her side. She was 89 years young.
Janice was born to Frederick and Lillian Hummel in Irvington, NJ and moved to Pompton Plains in 1958 when she married her husband, Frederick M. Vicine. They built a house and raised their three children in town. Janice was a devoted mother actively involved her children’s activities, taking time to be a scout leader, yet also spent time with her friends playing in the town’s woman’s softball league. She also quilted a square which is part of the Pequannock Township bicentennial quilt. Janice worked for many years in the insurance industry and spent the 20 years before retiring working for Cendant Corporation. After retirement, she became a docent for the Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms, along with being a member of the Thendara Mountain Club and the Pequannock Township Historical Society.
Janice was known for her long hugs, her caring spirit, and welcoming personality. She was young at heart and took up hiking and cross-country skiing in her later years and enjoyed many adventures with her four grandchildren. She saw the beauty in everything, from nature to people, and enjoyed a good snuggle with her pets. She loved going to church, traveling, swimming, kayaking, music, antiques, bird watching, cats, and gardening. She was a very special lady and will be greatly missed by all.
Janice is predeceased by her dear husband, Frederick M. Vicine Sr. She is survived by her loving children: Patricia Vicine Chiarello of Pompton Plains; Wendy Vicine of Cedar Knolls; and Frederick Vicine Jr. and his wife Lisa of Atlanta, Georgia. Janice was blessed with four cherished grandchildren: Brittany Hurley and her husband Steve; Jillian; Madeline and Alexander. Janice is also survived by her sister, Eleanor Peterson of Charlotte, North Carolina, and is predeceased by her brother, Frederick Hummel.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 22 from 1 pm to 4 pm in the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, 781 Newark Pompton Turnpike (at the corner of Mountain Avenue), Pompton Plains, New Jersey. A graveside service will be held at 11 am, Monday, January 23 in the Reformed Church Cemetery, 529 Newark Pompton Turnpike, Pompton Plains, New Jersey.
