Wednesday, March 2nd (2022) when my twin brother and I would normally celebrate our birthday, exactly 7 months after losing dad, we said goodbye to our beautiful Mom, Konstantina “Dina” Kafkis (Chronopoulou); she was 91. Born and raised on a mountain in Peloponnese, Greece, in a little village called Mali. She was the 2nd youngest of 6 girls and last surviving member of her original family; her younger sister died less than 4 weeks ago in Greece. Mom was a pioneer with the heart of a warrior. In 1958, she left her entire family behind, travelling alone by ship for Canada. Her mother was inconsolable! “Where are you going? Others have an uncle, aunt, brother, sister, or cousin waiting for them on the other side, you have nobody! What will become of you?” She left regardless, trusting her faith in God and her wits. When she arrived in Halifax on December 28th after a long journey, she and her shipmates (also new arrivals from Greece) were greeted with bitterly cold winds and snow up to the rooftops; the land seemed inhospitable. Having never left home or seen snow before, they all cried when they saw it! When asked by Canadian officials, most of her shipmates said they were headed for Montreal where a relative was waiting. When it was her turn, knowing nothing of Canada and perhaps a little embarrassed, mom gave a response typical of her. “All of Canada is mine, wherever I go it’s the same”. Since she gave no real response, her journey continued as she was sent by train alone to Toronto where she was placed in a home as a nanny. Mom was wonderful with children, so this was a good fit. As a child myself, I remember how nurturing, funny, sweet and kind she was with lots of hugs and kisses to go around; she could fix any problem with a few simple words. She returned to Greece and married Dad in 1963, bringing him to Canada as well. When she became a grandmother, it gave me great joy to see her loving, sweet, energetic, playful self with my sons. When I was no longer a child, I also saw how strong, independent, tough, resilient, determined, clever, resourceful, protective, hard-working, loyal and dedicated this little warrior was. When needed, she stood her ground and was even defiant, despite her small frame. Yet, in times of crisis, when her family needed her most, especially when dad needed her most, with so much courage, strength and tenderness (even into her 90’s) she would act, lifting our spirits in the process. It was incredible to watch! She was kind, considerate, of strong faith and extremely generous; donating to the church, the needy and the sick her entire adult life, even when she herself had hardly anything when first arriving to Canada. She often said, “help where help was needed most, even if it meant just giving of your time.” In recent years, she arranged to rebuild a little church in her village back home; the villagers were profoundly grateful. A fighter to the very end. My wife and I were with her in her last moments; very profound and so thankful we were there for her. I’m thankful for the wisdom she exuded when she chose to come to Canada over 63 years ago. Thankful for everything she taught me and how she helped mold me into who I am today. There are no more lessons now, just memories, as she’s off to be with dad and the rest of her family. She leaves behind twin sons John and Bill, daughter-in-law Pina, her cherished grandsons Demetri and Andy, extended family and dear friends. We love you mom. Rest now. Your journey has ended and a new one has begun; a journey you must once again face alone. Only this time, Dad and the others will be waiting for you.

My Tribute Gift Foundation makes this online charitable giving portal web page MyTributeGift.org (the “Website”) available to you subject to your acceptance of and compliance with these terms of use (the “Terms of Use”). Your donation will be processed through My Tribute Gift Foundation for distribution to your selected charity. Your credit card transaction record will appear as My Tribute Gift Foundation. An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.
You warrant and represent that all information and materials you provide to My Tribute Gift Foundation, through the Website or otherwise, are accurate and truthful and do not violate third party rights. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.
If in any part of these Terms of Use is held, by a court of competent jurisdiction, to be invalid or unenforceable, such part of these Terms of Use shall be eliminated to the extent permitted in that jurisdiction, for purposes of that jurisdiction, and the remaining Terms of Use shall otherwise remain in full force and effect.
These Terms of Use and your use of the Website are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and all federal laws of Canada applicable therein. The courts of the Province of Ontario shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising out of these Terms of Use or your use of the Website.
These Terms of Use constitute the entire agreement between you and My Tribute Gift Foundation with respect to the Website, except as we may explicitly agree otherwise in writing.. No delay or failure to exercise any right with respect to these Terms of Use shall be construed as a waiver by My Tribute Gift Foundation.
As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified. It is your responsibility to review these Terms of Use regularly.
