Susan Greaves, 71, of Hurley, NY passed away on June 16th 2022 surrounded by her loved ones. She will be hugely missed by her friends and family and the world is a poorer place without her.
She was born Susan DeStefano on March 21, 1951 to Michael and Mary DeStefano of Creek Locks, NY, the youngest of five children. Susan attended Kingston High School and SUNY New Paltz where she earned a degree in public speaking.
While living in New Paltz, Susan met and married Dan Greaves. Together, with family, they opened the bar The Blue Jay Way in Kingston, NY and ran it for almost 20 years.
Susan loved to talk to people and made friends wherever she went. She loved yard sales and reselling her finds at the High Falls Flea Market where she was a regular for almost 40 years. Susan was a nationally ranked dart player ( despite having atrocious dart form), was the best Christmas tree chooser, a beautiful gardener, and a crackerjack at old movie trivia. Most notably, Susan was a lover of animals, particularly cats, a trait her children mercilessly exploited. When she couldn't find homes for the animals she rescued, she would bring them home and care for them herself.
Susan was a loving, funny, smart, beautiful person and the best mother and grandmother you will ever find. She is survived by her husband of 45 years Daniel Greaves, her children; Katie, Gerard and Danny, her daughter-in-law Marianne, Alex, her grandchildren; Vivienne and Payson and her dog, Gypsy, and cats; Susie and Atticus.
The family will receive friends during memorial visitation at the Gilpatric-VanVliet Funeral Home, 339 Broadway, Ulster Park, on Saturday, June 25, 2022 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, followed by a service of remembrance at 4:00 pm.
