Jean A. Duffy, D.Ed, NCC, of McLean Virginia, passed away on Monday, June 6, 2022. She was born November 11, 1956, in Philadelphia, a daughter of the late William David and Mary Eileen (Doyle) Duffy. She received her BA degree in Psychology from Mercyhurst College in 1985, her MA degree in Counseling from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in 1988 and her D.Ed from Penn State University in 1999. Jean began her professional teaching career as an Instructor of Counselor Education with Penn State University from 1999-2005. From 2006-present, Jean became both an Affiliate Assistant Professor of Counselor Education at Penn State University and was a member of the Adjunct Faculty at Capella University, School of Human Services. She was also part of the Adjunct Faculty at Walden University, School of Psychology from 2007-present. Jean’s professional experiences include working as an Adult Counselor, Department of Outreach at Penn State University from 1999-2005 and a Career Development Specialist, Department of Outreach, Penn State University from 2006-2007. During her career, she wrote several professional publications which include, Applying the critical thinking process to career decision making of adult learners; Journal of Continuing Higher Education, 1998. The application of chaos theory to the career plateaued worker; Journal of Employment Counseling, 2000, and The relationship between critical thinking abilities, dispositional traits and the career states of part-time adult learners; Journal of Continuing Higher Education, 2001. Jean’s current article that is still in publication today is, Transformation Theory and Handwriting Analysis: The Perfect Marriage! She was a member of the American Counseling Association, American Mental Health Counseling Association and the Supervision and Counselor Education. Jean was very passionate about helping other realize their highest potential. She regularly worked with adults who committed to a profession in college and later found out they weren’t satisfied with that profession and wanted to change. She helped them through that career change so they could find a profession that was fulfilling. When visiting her at State College, she was treated like the Mayor. As we would go through town, many greeted her and called out by name and said, “Hi Duff”. It almost felt like she knew everybody. Once, Jean and her brother were sitting in restaurant in State College and in walked the president of Penn State and his wife. He walked right over to the table and greeted Jean by name wanting to know how she was doing. She knew everybody. Jean was very intuitive and could figure people out very quickly. This along with her contagious upbeat personality and smile, would quickly disarm people and they felt very safe sharing with Jean which then allowed her to help them more effectively. She had a light about her wherever she went, and this light built immediate trust. Jean had 3 major health issues any one of which would have a significant impact on day-to-day life, but you would never know it with Jean. Jean’s infectious spirit and laugh, unapologetic humility and quiet tenacity triumphed over these health challenges. It was a testament to her strength, will and positivity that she lived every day to the fullest despite her health challenges. She willingly stood as an example to all she met that their struggles need not define them, need not be their identity, and need not limit their accomplishments. She was led by her parents from an early age that she can’t control the actions or words of others or the challenges that life brings but she was very much in control of her response. This lesson served her well. Jean is survived by her brother, William “Bill” Duffy; a sister, Kathleen “Kathy” Duffy; 26 cousins many of whom were like siblings, and many second cousins. Jean enjoyed the company of two special pets, Gimpy her cat and Nittany her dog. Jean also had a core group of lifelong friends or chosen family. One very special person was Maxine, Jean’s caregiver. Maxine provided loving care and support to Jean for the last 3 years which provided good quality of life despite her health challenges. Maxine treated Jean like family…very much like sisters. Family and friends are welcome on Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Beinhauer Funeral Home, 2828 Washington Road, McMurray (724-941-3211). Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Catherine Labouré Parish, St. Louise de Marillac Church. Interment in Queen of Heaven Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Jean’s memory may be made to the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation (www.oif.org/donations) Jean was a blessing from God. To be an example to us all, a beacon, a life to be lived.

Your donation will be processed through My Tribute Gift Foundation for distribution to your selected charity. Your credit card transaction record will appear as My Tribute Gift Foundation. An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.

Limitations of Liability. TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL MY TRIBUTE GIFT FOUNDATION OR ITS AFFILIATES, OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, SERVICE PROVIDERS, AND AGENTS (THE "FOUNDATION PARTIES") BE LIABLE FOR ANY: (i) INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, COMPENSATORY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES; (ii) DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF INCOME, LOSS OF PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF DATA OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY; (iii) CLAIMS OF THIRD PARTIES; OR (iv) OTHER PECUNIARY LOSS, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THESE TERMS OF USE, THE WEBSITE OR ANY LINKED SITE. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.

As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified.
