Joan M. Stanford Peterson, 88, wife of the late Carl L. Peterson, passed away Monday, March 1, 2022, at her home in Hershey with her loving daughter, Irene, by her side.
Born in Harrisburg on April 26, 1933, she was daughter of the late Richard W. and Marie E. Myers Stanford.
Joan was a 1951 graduate of the former William Penn High School, Harrisburg, where she entered numerous contests on her flute accomplishing superior ratings. She graduated from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathy Nursing School in 1954.
Joan worked as a private duty registered nurse in area hospitals for many years. She found great joy working for Child Evangelism Fellowship of Dauphin County as a secretary for 10 years. During the summer months, Joan worked as a teacher and nurse for two of the day camps of Child Evangelism Fellowship. A very active member of Grace Bible Fellowship Church, Colonial Park, she served as a soloist and flutist. Joan also started the Junior Youth Program for grades 3 through 6 and directed the Junior Choir at the church for many years. For over 50 years, Joan taught the Good News Club in her home for both the church and Child Evangelism Fellowship.
A devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Joan loved her grandchildren attending all their sporting and school events, and babysitting for them during the summer months and taking them to the pool. She loved the color purple and was sure to wear some shade of it everyday, not to mention decorate some of the rooms of her home in purple.
In addition to her parents and husband Carl, Joan was preceded in death by her two sons, Daniel D. Peterson and James L. Peterson; a brother, Richard L. Stanford; and a sister, Rose Weaver.
Joan is survived by two daughters, Irene E. Peterson fiancée of Robert Graybill, Jr. with whom she lived, and Linda M. Poleshuk of Dauphin; one son, Thomas C. Peterson of Dauphin; nine grandchildren, Dylan Peterson, Ginger Pichel, John Morgan III, David Poleshuk, Larry Enck Jr., Zachary Peterson, Tommy Peterson, Josh Peterson and Sheree Peterson; and 15 great grandchildren.
A service to celebrate Joan’s life will be held Friday, March 11, 2022 at 11 AM in Grace Bible Fellowship Church, 1250 Colonial Road, Harrisburg, with the Rev. Joshua P. Miller, her pastor, officiating. Inurnment will be in Rolling Green Cemetery, Camp Hill. A time to visit with the family will be held Friday in the church from 10 AM until time of the service.
