Virginia A. Nelson, 93, a beloved mother and local entrepreneur, passed away peacefully Sunday, September 12, 2021, at New Perspective, Silvis, Illinois. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 on Thursday, September 16, at Sacred Heart Church, Moline, followed by a private burial at the Moline Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rock Island County Historical Society or a favorite charity. Virginia (Ginger) was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the only daughter of James and Marion (McBane) Toohey and great- granddaughter of an early Iowa pioneer family. Virginia lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma, before moving to Moline in her junior year of high school. She graduated from Moline High School and went on to attend Augustana College, and became a member of the Phi Rho Sorority. She married Franklin L. Nelson on April 22, 1950 in Moline. Virginia started her career as a Rock Island County tax assessor and then as a realtor for Mel Foster. Virginia, with her partner Carol Doyle, started the first female-owned realty company in the Quad-Cities – Doyle Nelson & Co. She was a long-standing member of the Illinois Realtor Association. Virginia went on to start the Pie Company with her partner Bernice Mason. She is credited with creating the first Chipper ice cream sandwich for Whitey’s Ice Cream -- named after her son Chipper— as well as the famous Whitey’s ice cream pies. Virginia took pride in her contribution to her community. She served on the Moline Planning Commission, the Board of Directors for Friendship Manor, and a member of the Carolyn Getz Circle of Kings Daughters, which was one of the groups operating the Thrift Shop downtown Moline. She also volunteered her time with Meals on Wheels and the Food Bank. She loved entertaining, playing bridge, traveling the world, sewing quilts, designing purses, and creating Halloween costumes for grandchildren. She enjoyed time spent as a member of Short Hills Country Club. She was a talented cook and was loved for her sour cream raisin pie, Christmas cream wafers, Texas sheet cake, sugar sandwiches, and Sunday night dinners for the whole family. She left behind so many good memories of family vacations to Dauphin Island, picking and eating raspberries off her bushes, creative uses of her copy machine by grandchildren, and her not-so-secret candy drawer. Her home was open to friends, children, and children’s friends. She allowed pets of all kinds in the home -- from cats and dogs to rabbits, snakes, fish, hamsters, and a lamb. The true love of her life was her family. Both Virginia and Frank were only children who chose to fill their home with a bunch of loud, fun-loving children. Credit goes to Virginia for raising such a close family that no one wanted to miss a Sunday dinner. Being seated together at the children’s table led to a life-time of close friendships for all the young cousins. After dinner, there were always rounds of cards and games to be played. Survivors (and spouses) include her daughters Susan (Kevin) Blackall, Moline, and Janet (Dennis) Donnelly, Des Moines, Iowa; her sons Richard “Chipper” (Suzanne) Nelson, Jeffrey (Kimberly) Nelson, and John (Elisabeth) Nelson, all of Moline. Virginia is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Jennifer (Mark) Mitchell, Emmeli Blackall, Hillary (James) Leach, Megan (Kyle) Cibula, Brett (Josh) Nelson, Kara (Tyler) Wiesemeyer, Alex Nelson, Lindsey Nelson, Benjamin Nelson, Luke Donnelly, and Molly Donnelly, and 13 great grandchildren. My Tribute Gift Foundation makes this online charitable giving portal web page MyTributeGift.org (the “Website”) available to you subject to your acceptance of and compliance with these terms of use (the “Terms of Use”). Your donation will be processed through My Tribute Gift Foundation for distribution to your selected charity. Your credit card transaction record will appear as My Tribute Gift Foundation. An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.
You warrant and represent that all information and materials you provide to My Tribute Gift Foundation, through the Website or otherwise, are accurate and truthful and do not violate third party rights. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.
If in any part of these Terms of Use is held, by a court of competent jurisdiction, to be invalid or unenforceable, such part of these Terms of Use shall be eliminated to the extent permitted in that jurisdiction, for purposes of that jurisdiction, and the remaining Terms of Use shall otherwise remain in full force and effect.
These Terms of Use and your use of the Website are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and all federal laws of Canada applicable therein. The courts of the Province of Ontario shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising out of these Terms of Use or your use of the Website.
These Terms of Use constitute the entire agreement between you and My Tribute Gift Foundation with respect to the Website, except as we may explicitly agree otherwise in writing.. No delay or failure to exercise any right with respect to these Terms of Use shall be construed as a waiver by My Tribute Gift Foundation.
As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified. It is your responsibility to review these Terms of Use regularly.
