PORTIS, Basile “Bill” - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, brother, uncle, pops and friend. Basile (Bill) left this world peacefully on Saturday, July 4th, 2020 with his family by his side at the age of 91. Basile was the loving husband of Fotena (Tina) for 56 years. He was also the loving and cherished father of Christina (Marc Gagnon) and Kenny. Pops to Stephan Gagnon (Marie-France). Predeceased by his parents Christos and Fotena Portis. Dear brother of the late Sophia Panousopoulos (late Ken), the late Koula Georgakopoulos (late John), Leonidas Port (Toula), the late Thomas Portis (Athena), and Aristotle Portis (Barbara). Brother-in-law of the late Kosmas Bekiares (late Eleni), the late Andreas Vekiari (Jeni), the late Alkis C. Bekiares (Olga), the late Loukia Hasapis (late Nick), and the late Konstantino Bekiares. He will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews in Canada, the United States, England, Austria and in Greece. Born in Pentalofos, Greece on October 16th, 1928 Bill came to Canada on February 15th, 1957 for a better life. He started working in Thunder Bay (Great Lakes Paper Mill) during the bitter winter and often tells family and friends that he was ready to move back to Greece after getting frostbite. Bill later started working in a restaurant and this is where he found his true talent, cooking. Bill returned to Pentalofos, Greece in 1964 to marry his love, Fotena. Together they moved back to Thunder Bay to start their adventure together. At one point the Port brothers along with the Metsopoulos and Panousopoulos families ran three restaurants one in Thunder Bay (the Embassy), one in Nipigon (the Shell) and one in Wawa (the Embassy). When children came, it was easier to run only one restaurant. So, life in Wawa it was... Bill loved his job, he loved his community of Wawa and he loved all the people that he met while co-running the Embassy Restaurant for 31 years. He taught us all what a great work ethic was. Even in retirement you would often see him going for coffee just in case he ran into the many American tourists who still travelled to their favourite fishing holes and, he also loved all his Wawa friends. Bill loved to talk and tell stories over a cup of coffee and sometimes would brag about his Leafs beating the Canadians. He was known for his great coleslaw, bean soup, liver, veal cutlets, prime rib and for his amazing memory, he never needed a bill for all his orders. We’ve often been told that Bill was the best boss ever. His staff was always considered his extended family. When not working, Bill was passionate about his greenhouse and flower gardens. There are not enough words to describe Bill’s love for his family and friends. He had such a generous heart, always kind and giving, and he never expected anything in return. You meant the world to him. And, he truly was our hero and our rock. Due to Covid-19 a small private family service will be held at the Kerry Funeral Home Ltd. in Wawa, Ontario (www.kerryfuneralhome.ca) on Wednesday, July 8th with Mrs. Lorna Chiupka officiating. Internment will take place at the Woodland Cemetery in Wawa. A memorial service will also be held by the Bekiares families in Pentalofos, Greece at a later date. Words cannot express our sincere thanks to all the staff at the Lady Dunn Health Center. Your kindness, compassion, professionalism and daily chats made this difficult journey so much easier. A heartful thanks to Dr. Stamler and Troy Dereski for your excellent support and care for Bill. We would also like to thank Dr. Voutsadakis and Dr. Carlson from the Sault Area Hospital. Thank You to Valerie at the Kerry Funeral Home for your guidance, compassion and professionalism. Our community is lucky to have you. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lady Dunn Health Center would be appreciated by the family. Or raise a glass, have a cup of coffee, gather with family and friends for a meal, tell a great story, plant or weed your garden. Remember him by doing something he loved to do. Bill will be smiling down on our family and you.

My Tribute Gift Foundation makes this online charitable giving portal web page MyTributeGift.org (the “Website”) available to you subject to your acceptance of and compliance with these terms of use (the “Terms of Use”). Your donation will be processed through My Tribute Gift Foundation for distribution to your selected charity. Your credit card transaction record will appear as My Tribute Gift Foundation. An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.
You warrant and represent that all information and materials you provide to My Tribute Gift Foundation, through the Website or otherwise, are accurate and truthful and do not violate third party rights. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.
If in any part of these Terms of Use is held, by a court of competent jurisdiction, to be invalid or unenforceable, such part of these Terms of Use shall be eliminated to the extent permitted in that jurisdiction, for purposes of that jurisdiction, and the remaining Terms of Use shall otherwise remain in full force and effect.
These Terms of Use and your use of the Website are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and all federal laws of Canada applicable therein. The courts of the Province of Ontario shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising out of these Terms of Use or your use of the Website.
These Terms of Use constitute the entire agreement between you and My Tribute Gift Foundation with respect to the Website, except as we may explicitly agree otherwise in writing.. No delay or failure to exercise any right with respect to these Terms of Use shall be construed as a waiver by My Tribute Gift Foundation.
As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified. It is your responsibility to review these Terms of Use regularly.
