Deborah Ann Saunders, went home to the Lord on Wednesday, December 8, 2021. "Debbie" as she was affectionally called, was born on April 5, 1949, to Wilma (nee' Gist) and William Saunders, Jr. Debbie was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and attended the Atlantic City Public Schools. She was a life time member of Second Baptist Church in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Debbie graduated from Atlantic City High School in 1967. During that time, she was one of the co-founders of the "Chartayes", an African American high school girls' social club founded in 1964. Her fondest high school memories and close friends were all associated with the club. The '67 Chartayes included: Vondell Mixson, Linda Anderson, Mosezetta Bailey, Elise McClinton, Diana Ward, Donna Twisdale, Renee Nelson, Joyce Brooks, Belinda Lee, Gaye Allen, Joanne Brown, Keturah Jackson, Sandra Jowers, Charlene Williams, Andria Minor, Rhonda Jones, Donna Carter and Greta Gray. The fun and social outings she had with this group never ended. They were forever on the telephone, laughing and keeping secrets, studying together, organizing parties and social events, traveling and eating at the local restaurants. Her other special friends were: Cheryl Meade and Lane Watson.
Upon graduating from high school, she attended Cheyney University and Golden Beacon Business School. Throughout the years, she was employed in various clerical positions.
Debbie loved music! She enjoyed singing and had a beautiful voice. As a youth, she often sang solos on the church's Youth and Rosebud choirs. She had a special love for gospel music and smooth jazz. One of her favorite singers was Nancy Wilson. Her other favorite activities included: watching the Christian Channel, enjoying Whoopie Goldberg's movie, "Sister Act"; and eating York Peppermint Patties and Tootsie Roll Pops.
Debbie was genuine, truthful and thoughtful. She was very likable with an amazing sense of humor—always smiling, laughing and joking. With her outgoing personality, she easily met friends and acquaintances who enjoyed her company. Over the years, she resided at the Meadowview Nursing Center in Northfield, New Jersey, where the staff was attentive and caring. They all knew Debbie and she could recall each of their names.
Debbie was a loving sister and aunt. She loved her family, especially her nephew Kaighn and great-nephew Yashir. She will be sadly missed by the family and all who knew and loved her.
