Wayne S. Hoffner, age 86 died peacefully in his sleep on January 19, 2022. Born in Camden, NJ he was raised and lived most of his life in Pitman, NJ. A 1953 graduate and football player of Pitman High School later joining his buddies as a member of Highland Chemical Engine Company. Attended Delaware Valley College of Science and Agricultural for Ornamental Horticulture. Began a career in education teaching prisoners in the greenhouses at Graterford Prison then jumped to Philadelphia Schools after getting his Masters at Temple University. In the early 60's he taught biology and coached football at Pitman High School then later Sterling.
Awarded a fellowship to Indiana University to address a shortage of Guidance Counselors in higher education. He went became a counselor at Glassboro State College (Rowan University). He worked his way through many roles always wanting to work closely with the students. Thirty one years later, he retired as the Dean of the University. Still wanting to give back he began working with Gloucester County Habitat for Humanity, taking the lead as President for a couple of years. In retirement he enjoyed traveling, following Rowan football and summers on the beach in Ocean City. You could always find Wayne in a crowd by simply listening for his whistle.
Wayne was predeceased by his wife Adelaide V Hoffner (nee Schellinger) and brother Christopher Dale Hoffner. He is survived by his two sons Rick (Leigh) of Ocean Springs, MS, Jim (Cathy) of Shamong, NJ, granddaughter Kristyn and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Tuesday January 25th 9:30 to 11:00 in the Kelley Funeral Home, 125 Pitman Ave., Pitman, NJ. A private funeral service and interment at Hillcrest Memorial Park will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gloucester County Habitat for Humanity.
