One year ago, Barbara Sciaky’s long and fulfilling life—which centered on children, music, food, gardening, quilting, family and friendships—came to an end. She was 90. Barbara was born to immigrant parents Gladys (Zimmerman) and William Altstadt in New York City. She had one sister, Judy, three years her elder. Barbara was an eager and excelling student in school, graduating early from Julia Richmond High School and Hunter College, both in New York. At summer camp, which she attended from an early age, and together with her older sister, she fell in love with square dancing and folk music. The two sisters attended the weekly gatherings of Margo Mayo’s American Square Dance Group in the 1940s, as well as appearing on Mayo’s weekly WNYC radio show. In 1946, Mayo recommended Barbara for a job as counselor at High Peak, which was a new summer camp near Catskill, New York. She was hired for the job and it was there she met Peter Sciaky, the son of camp directors Frances and Leon Sciaky. Less than two years later, she and Peter married. After her graduation from Hunter College and up until their daughter Carla was born, Barbara worked as a nursery school teacher at The Little Red Schoolhouse. Not long after their son Noah was born, Peter’s career in petroleum geology took the family from Brooklyn, New York, to Boulder, Colorado, where their son Loren was born. Barbara went back to school at the University of Colorado Boulder to get certified to teach public school, and then went on to get her master’s degree in primary education. She worked as the first-grade teacher at Mapleton Elementary School from 1971 until her retirement in 1991, garnering a reputation as a pioneer and model teacher of a progressive open classroom. She created a dynamic, student-centered classroom where kids learned to love learning. She was particularly captivated by young children and had a fierce belief in their creativity, wisdom, and potential. As a former student put it, “She nurtured students along their unique learning paths,” and her classroom was a haven of experiential learning. After she retired from teaching, Barbara took up the hobby of quilting and discovered she had quite an eye for color and pattern. She was also a knitter, producing many adorable sweaters for children in homeless shelters. Throughout the years Barbara and Peter were always avid gardeners. She especially loved roses and had many varieties growing in their plentiful gardens. After Peter died in 2009, she tended his collection of exquisite orchids. At the behest of a friend, Barbara joined a writers’ group and began putting together a collection of captivating stories from her years as a classroom teacher. In her last years, Barbara spoke often about her life and experiences. She reminded us that she was fortunate to have had such a good life, and while she acknowledged life’s troubles, her focus was steadfastly on the good times. She died of old age, peacefully, in her sleep. She was preceded in death by husband Peter and sister Judy, and is survived by daughter Carla, her husband Dan, and their children, Chloe and Rachel; son Noah, his wife Julie, and their children Simon and Lilah; and son Loren. My Tribute Gift Foundation makes this online charitable giving portal web page MyTributeGift.org (the “Website”) available to you subject to your acceptance of and compliance with these terms of use (the “Terms of Use”). Your donation will be processed through My Tribute Gift Foundation for distribution to your selected charity. Your credit card transaction record will appear as My Tribute Gift Foundation. An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.
You warrant and represent that all information and materials you provide to My Tribute Gift Foundation, through the Website or otherwise, are accurate and truthful and do not violate third party rights. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.
If in any part of these Terms of Use is held, by a court of competent jurisdiction, to be invalid or unenforceable, such part of these Terms of Use shall be eliminated to the extent permitted in that jurisdiction, for purposes of that jurisdiction, and the remaining Terms of Use shall otherwise remain in full force and effect.
These Terms of Use and your use of the Website are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and all federal laws of Canada applicable therein. The courts of the Province of Ontario shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising out of these Terms of Use or your use of the Website.
These Terms of Use constitute the entire agreement between you and My Tribute Gift Foundation with respect to the Website, except as we may explicitly agree otherwise in writing.. No delay or failure to exercise any right with respect to these Terms of Use shall be construed as a waiver by My Tribute Gift Foundation.
As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified. It is your responsibility to review these Terms of Use regularly.
