As you have stated in the past though, Bert was ready, and it must be comforting to know that she is with your father, her beloved Irv. Bertha Spector (10-17-1917 to 8-30-2021) was the youngest of 6 children born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to a working-class family. She had a difficult early life. Her mother died when Bert was 2 years of age and although her siblings were sent into children's care, Bert was sent to live with an aunt and uncle in Pittsburgh, PA. Although later in life Bert spoke with gratitude about her adoptive family, as a young child she felt the burden of ‘being worthy’ of them. Bert worked hard in school, and always dreamed of going to Penn State for college. However, when she was a teenager, at the height of the Great Depression, her family could not afford to send her to college, even though she had earned a scholarship. For Bert, this was a major disappointment of her youth. Honing her secretarial skills, Bert tried hard to find a job during the Depression. She finally talked her way into a job as a legal secretary to a Harvard trained lawyer and learned her skills on the job. In her early 20’s she met Irvin Spector: the couple dated and married when Bert was 23 and Irv 25 years of age. Bert and Irv moved to Denver after they married and had four children. When he was only 39 years of age, Irv had his first heart attack. He sold his house and the rug cleaning business he had created and the entire family moved to Europe for a year. Bert’s love for foreign travel was born at that time. When they returned to the United States, and while all four children were in school, Bert finally accomplished her teenage goal and was able to go to college. She took a few courses a semester and eventually earned a B.A. in English and was very proud to be Phi Beta Kappa. When she was only 50 years old, Irv died suddenly of a second heart attack. Bert was devastated and although 3 of the children were grown and had moved on, Bert had to learn to be a single parent to her youngest daughter, who was 12 when Irv died. Bert returned to work as a secretary and managed to make lifelong friends as she moved from one secretarial stint to another. She had good skills and never had a problem quitting a boring job and easily finding another. She used her extra earnings to finance many more trips abroad. When Bert was in her 60’s she joined the Peace Corps and spent a year in Tonga teaching English. She considered this service to be a major accomplishment in her life. Bert’s life seemed to improve as she aged. She loved listening to opera on Sundays, seeing independent films, travelling and playing scrabble with friends, discussing current events, and reading. She also successfully managed several difficult transitions. After a brain surgery, she moved into senior housing and took an active role in community life. She volunteered to deliver mail in her housing facility in order to be included in most facility outings, and she led aerobics classes for the community. In her 80’s, she developed a special relationship with her dear friend, Hank Teitelbaum, and she was extremely active and well-liked in her community of peers. When health incapacity made it necessary to move to a higher level of care, Bert was able to accept her circumstances and continued to make friends in the new facility. The staff loved Bert and admired her for her love of reading and her determination to keep as active as possible for the remainder of her life. Bert will be remembered for her acerbic wit and sense of humor, her ability to adjust to life circumstances, and her wide range of friends over her lifetime. She is survived by her four children: Robert Spector, Jan Spector, Martin Spector, and Laurie Spector; her three grandchildren: David Spector, Katherine Spector, and Naomi Spector; and her two great-grandchildren, Andrew Spector and Logan Spector. A remembrance event and celebration of Bert's life is being planned for the near future, and details will be forthcoming. My Tribute Gift Foundation makes this online charitable giving portal web page MyTributeGift.org (the “Website”) available to you subject to your acceptance of and compliance with these terms of use (the “Terms of Use”). Your donation will be processed through My Tribute Gift Foundation for distribution to your selected charity. Your credit card transaction record will appear as My Tribute Gift Foundation. An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.
You warrant and represent that all information and materials you provide to My Tribute Gift Foundation, through the Website or otherwise, are accurate and truthful and do not violate third party rights. Scope of Limitations and Disclaimers. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.
If in any part of these Terms of Use is held, by a court of competent jurisdiction, to be invalid or unenforceable, such part of these Terms of Use shall be eliminated to the extent permitted in that jurisdiction, for purposes of that jurisdiction, and the remaining Terms of Use shall otherwise remain in full force and effect.
These Terms of Use and your use of the Website are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and all federal laws of Canada applicable therein. The courts of the Province of Ontario shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising out of these Terms of Use or your use of the Website.
These Terms of Use constitute the entire agreement between you and My Tribute Gift Foundation with respect to the Website, except as we may explicitly agree otherwise in writing.. No delay or failure to exercise any right with respect to these Terms of Use shall be construed as a waiver by My Tribute Gift Foundation.
As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified. It is your responsibility to review these Terms of Use regularly.
