Ann & I are sorry for your loss and will hold his memories in our hearts. I always remember when I was in my early teens how my father and myself would go for a drive over to see Uncle Robert and would go out to the workshop to look at the tractors or cars he was working on . That's probably where I started my interest in engines and rebuilding of them. I will miss the old days and all the memories that went with them. He seemed like a gentle giant to me . He was a great Uncle.

Robert Gene Martens passed away at the age of 91, on Sunday January 14, 2024 at Riverview Gardens, surrounded by his family. He was the 8th of 10 children born to Theophil and Seraphina (Wagenaer) Martens on March 30, 1932, in Chatham, Ontario. The family emigrated to Canada from Holland in 1926. They started Canadian life in Chatham, at the Ursuline Convent, where Theophil worked as caretaker and groundskeeper. As youngsters, Robert and Willy, his brother & best friend, helped grow vegetables on the Convent grounds on Ursuline Avenue, and sold them at Market Square in the city centre. They also served as convent altar boys. Quite a few stories were born of that experience. The family later lived in the St. Thomas - Aylmer area, farming tobacco, until they eventually returned, settling on a farm near Eberts. Robert met his wife of over 71 years, the love of his life, Julia Anna (Schouppe) when he was only 16 years old. They both worked hard and made a good life together for themselves and their girls, but they were also devoted to their weekend nights out dancing with a wide circle of friends. Their dancing prowess was such that even at the ripe old age of 83 at a family wedding, Robert was beset by young girls wanting to dance with him and learn from him. For an ordinary guy, Robert was an extraordinary man. His easy, gregarious nature allowed him to make friends easily, likely in part because he was such a respectful and inspired listener. He made people feel understood and appreciated. His daughters always felt like they won the Worlds Best Dad lottery, because he was their Dad. Robert was remarkably generous with his time and talents, particularly with his skill as a heavy-duty mechanic. As a young man, his gentle, upbeat, even-tempered nature earned him a nickname from his workmates - Captain Easy. His ′punch-the-clock′ work life started at Kent Dairy, but his chosen field of work soon lead him to Chatham ′s International Harvester farm equipment store. He started there as a mechanic, graduating to foreman, then service supervisor (covering territory from Stratford to Windsor), then on to farm equipment sales, where he became the region ′s top salesman. Time constraints later influenced a move to the Navistar truck plant. Robert realized one of his biggest dreams when be bought his farm in Harwich Township, Conc 4, RTS, but that dream was cut short by health issues. Every cloud, however, has a silver lining, as did Robert′s health issues. He started work life early, but he also retired early, only to discover that he was born to be a fisherman as well as a farmer. He spent many treasured hours on Lake Erie with his good buddies, Lloyd Clapp and Bill Colby. One of the more memorable fish-tales Robert told was about bringing in a big old wily salmon, with the help of his son-in-law, Brian, giving him a last minute, high suspense, adventurous win to a fishing tournament on Lake Erie in 1994. His grandchildren also benefitted, since retirement allowed him much more time to spend with them, being an attentive, fun and fabulous Poppa. Hobbies had their place, too. He loved the comraderie of weekly euchre games, and his time spent as chauffeur to Kenny Demers. At the initiative of his brother-in-law Gilbert Mackelberg, he also spent many years as a ham radio operator, VE3 RCM – yet another situation in which he made many valued friends around the globe. So - if a successful life is measured by how much you were loved and respected during your time on this earth, then hands down, Robert won Gold. Many thanks to the staff at Riverview Gardens Long Term Care facility in Chatham, where he continued to capture hearts, for the kindness and care shown to him there. Robert is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Julia Anna (Schouppe), his daughters Elaine (John Macevicius) of Penticton, BC, and Michelle (Brian Toll) of Chatham, by grandchildren Vic, Renee and Allison, by two siblings, Alice (Boussen) and Agnes (Deketelaere) and by numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws. He is predeceased by siblings Eugenia (Staal), Tony, Joe, Alphonse, Mary (VandeWynckel), Willy, infant brother, Theophil, and numerous in-laws. Donations may be made in Robert ′s memory to the Chatham-Kent Hospice. A celebration of life, and a celebration mass will be held at a later date.

Your donation will be processed through My Tribute Gift Foundation for distribution to your selected charity. Your credit card transaction record will appear as My Tribute Gift Foundation. An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.

Limitations of Liability. TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL MY TRIBUTE GIFT FOUNDATION OR ITS AFFILIATES, OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, SERVICE PROVIDERS, AND AGENTS (THE "FOUNDATION PARTIES") BE LIABLE FOR ANY: (i) INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, COMPENSATORY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES; (ii) DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF INCOME, LOSS OF PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF DATA OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY; (iii) CLAIMS OF THIRD PARTIES; OR (iv) OTHER PECUNIARY LOSS, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THESE TERMS OF USE, THE WEBSITE OR ANY LINKED SITE. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.

As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified.
