It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our 96-year-old father and grandfather, Gerald (Gerry) Joseph MacDougall on September 14, 2022.
Born on January 19, 1926, he was the eldest son of the late Frank and Josephine (nee MacDonald) MacDougall.
Dad spent his early years picking potatoes with his siblings in the fields of Tyne Valley, PEI and loved playing tricks on his parents and his brothers and sisters. This is where he discovered his love for jokes, laughter, machinery and the great outdoors.
In 1941, his parents moved the family to Halifax, NS where at the age of 18, he chose to enter the Army and was a proud Veteran of WWII.
After the war, he moved to Toronto, ON where he met his beautiful future wife of 70 years, Grace (nee Young) and together, they raised three children, daughter Joyce, sons Jim (Kathy) and Frank (Lisa).
Upon settling our family in Etobicoke, ON, and given his early love for heavy equipment, Dad built a successful Mobile Crane company, making him one of the best crane operators around while mentoring many operators after him.
Dad was a loving husband, father, and grandfather with a good heart and a clever mind. He was a family man, remaining close to his siblings and visiting Nova Scotia and PEI whenever he had the chance. His greatest joy was his grandsons, Hunter and Mason, who loved their Poppy and will miss the stories he told and their time spent with him. They will cherish the memories of being on the Farm with Poppy and watching him restore his 1940 GMC.
Dad spent his final years in Parkwood Veterans Care where he made many friends and was provided the utmost care by many compassionate staff members.
Dad is now in Heaven with his parents, brothers Donald, Leonard and sisters Mary and Nellie. Leaving to mourn, his wife, his children, grandsons, brothers Basil, Reg, sister Pauline and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
A heartfelt thanks to Krista Cross for her help in the writing of dad’s obituary.
As requested, there will be no service. Cremation has taken place under the care of Woodland Cemetary, London ON.
May you rest in peace Dad. We love you and our days will never be the same without you.
