It is with great sadness we her children, announce the death of Florence Beatrice Otto on October 12, 2023 (Atlantic Time) at Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown, Nova Scotia, in her 100th year. Born in North Bay, Ontario, she was the last of her siblings. Predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Emerson (1999); daughter, Shelley (2003); brothers, René and Arthur; sisters, Jeanette, Theresa, Rita and Irene. Florence is survived by her children, Barbara of Toronto; Dawn of Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia; Francoise of Vancouver; Deborah (Randy) of Smiths Cove, Nova Scotia and Monica (Dag) of Auburn, Ontario; grandchildren, Dawn (Mike), Kara (Dean), Scott (Melanie), Troy and Annika; great grandchildren, Ila, Emerson and Brooke and three great - great grandchildren.
Before her marriage she worked in several towns, including Windsor, Brantford (during WWII as a fabric inspector) in rose greenhouses (hence her green thumb) and T Eaton Company in Kitchener where she met Emerson. Mom was a terrific baker and cook. Her pies were a Sunday staple. She always had a keen fashion sense and elegant style. Mom sewed many many beautiful clothes including formal gowns for us throughout the years. She created stunning rock gardens everywhere she lived. She had an iron determination and was a very prayerful person. We all benefited from those prayers: When we were kids we knelt and said the rosary as a family every night after supper.
Always healthy, she developed Parkinson’s in her later life. For the past 17 years she was cared for devotedly by her daughter Dawn. She was indeed fortunate to live at home during that period. Even with her hearing and eyesight failing she took care to ensure her clothes were colour coordinated and her hair was done. The last three months of her life she was in the Mountain
Lea Lodge, her care there has been exemplary. In this unstable world Mom was fortunate to die with dignity, pain-free in a peaceful place surrounded by love and gratitude.
Following Florence’s wishes a service of rememembrance will be held at a later date. A special thank you to Mountain Lea Lodge Staff, Tammy, Vera and Sharla, Ruthie and Greg. We also thank Father Walsh and Dr. Goodine and Dawn for your unending care and tenderness there are no words.
